Welcome
Welcome to my little corner of the World Wide Web. Perhaps you will find something here to amuse you, or something to interest you, or even just something to pass the time between much better things to do. It's likely, though, that you will find none of these things here.
But that's ok -- after all, you get what you pay for, and this is all free.
Who Am I?
My name's Tim Gades, and I'm a twentysomething software engineer. At the moment, I've just graduated college with a B.S. in Computer Science, and I'm waiting to start my first real job... an exciting and terrifying time. Who knew there were so many different kinds of health insurance?
In my free time, I like to sing, play the piano, play around with various languages, cook, hike, and draw on any available whiteboard. If you're not careful (and probably even if you are) I'll speak German at you.
I grew up in Minnesota, but now I live in Phoenix, Arizona: I just traded one extreme climate for another. 'Round about July, when the temperatures climb up towards 120°F, I start to wonder why.
What's Here?
There's more here than meets the casual glance; take a look at the navigtion bar over on the right to see what might lurk hidden behind the hyperlinks. But if that's too cryptic, or you're not feeling particularly adventuresome, read on, MacDuff:
Home: You are already here. In a strictly non-existential sense, of course. No ruby slippers necessary.
Art & Photos: My sister got most of the visual arts genes in my family, but I occasionally take a few photos on trips, or try my hand at some calligraphy.
Journal: A weblog laying out the sordid details of my day-to-day life for public consumption. For those who enjoy that kind of thing, because, let's face it, who doesn't?
Links: The Web is by its very nature an interlinked medium; here I do my part. Check out websites by people I know, other pages I've designed, things I like to read, and other generally worthwhile rest stops on the information superhighway. Warning: do not exceed speed limit. Worthwhile-ness may be in the eye of the beholder.
Poems & Essays: Occasionally I feel the need to put my thoughts on paper (or whiteboard, as the case may be.) Even more occasionally, I feel they're worth reading, and I post them here.
Projects: Eventually, this will be the home of various programming projects I've created. Right now, the only thing in any state of completeness is Menekh, an editor/typesetter for ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs--a program I created for my honors thesis in Computer Science.
Teratel: I have this sort of invented world I've been working on for a few years now. The people there have their own languages, cultures, and (sometimes wildly conflicting) histories. Those strange angular characters on the banner image at the top of this page spell out my name in the Tehosu alphabet; one of the many side-effects of constructing a language is coming up with a cool-looking alphabet to write it in. Brilliance, schizophrenia, or a mere waste of time? You decide.
What's New?
23 May 2006: First part of a new site design. Careful, not all the links are working yet. Those broken edges can be sharp.
